Greetings! Sorry everyone for the tardy newsletter. Been
busy. Hope everyone had a great Summer. The rest of the year looks like a great
line up.
Summer Camp 2008! Let the beatings begin!
This year’s camp was both spectacular and extraordinary!. Had a great time. Jose Zapata came from Puerto Rico with about four students. Kelly came from LA, Todd Anderson from Wisconsin and many others. Sensei Mutch Usera, 8th dan from South Dakota taught an outstanding jujitsu class and Grand Master Yong Sung Lee from Washington, D.C. taught hapkido. Sensei Randy Randolph and Sensei Josh Usera taught a great “ground and pound” MMA class. Others who attended included Dr. Patrick Price from Houston, Texas, Sensei Lynn Kureth from Jacksonville, Fl Sensei Dave Zimmer from Cleveland, Ohio and Sensei Robert Debyl from Maryland. We also had classes in karate, Kendo, white crane, kobudo & MMA, etc. Whew! Greg Beavers won watermelon kumite again!! How did this kid do it? Tim Rumsey [from Missouri] came in a close second. But second doesn’t count when the coveted prize is that Watermelon Kumite trophy! Should have this up on Youtube before too long. Shihan Rudy Crosswell could not make it at the last minute because of some health issues. Additionally, Sensei Robert Debyl tested for 4th dan in karate and 1st dan in kendo. Robert succeeded in both cases but not without an extreme physical effort on his part. Sensei Randy Randolph successfully passed his sandan test in jujitsu and Andrew Zimmer was graded to sankyu in karate.
A Surprise guest at the dojo sake party was Sensei Dave “Motorcycle Dave” Peters. Dave informed us that he wasn’t able to make the camp this year. But at the last minute the temptation of sharing the marital spirit and the camaraderie of the campers and his martial brothers was just too much for him. On Saturday morning Dave jumped on his Harley and drove fourteen hours from West Palm Beach, Florida to the mountains of Tennessee. At 10:30 p.m. Dave walked into the dojo and announced his presence at the sake party with a loud Osu! The guests were both surprised and amazed but glad to see one of their old friends. He partied with us until the wee hours. We reminisced about the old days while Dave and Josh Usera took turns throwing each other violently to the floor. The next day we all got up including Dave and headed for “white water” and our rafting trip. The mountains were beautiful and seemed almost magical as we glided down the Ocoee River and headed for class five rapids. After the exhilaration of fifty-degree water splashing over us we soon forgot about our sore muscles and sake hangovers. Next we experienced the rush of passing through “Table Saw” and “Hell’s Hole” screaming like teenage girls to whole time. When the trip concluded at 2:00 p.m. Dave said his goodbyes, jumped on his bike and headed back to Florida, a mere fourteen-hour ride [on a Harley]. Now that’s love. Osu! Dave.
Had a few newcomers this year. Unfortunately we are limited to only forty
(40) people next year. We could rent a bigger space but in order to keep this
great event in the mountains and at the Honbu dojo where your cabin and hot tub
are right next to the dojo www.whisperingridgecabins.com we’ve decided to limit the number of attendees. So in order to guarantee
your spot next year signup now and reserve for next year. It’s only $50.00 to reserve your spot.
Call 1-888-299-YAMA (9262). We’ve already signed up some folks for next year.
Okinawa Island of Karate! Will be leaving for Okinawa on
October 19th and will return November 3rd. I plan on
meeting with a number of karate masters and videotaping interviews with many of
them. One in particular is Daiyo sensei. He is the great grandson of Aragaki
Seisho. Many claim Aragaki is the inventor of the kata sanseiryu, unsu, niseishi
and seiunchin. These are all kata contained in the Hakutsuru Kenpo system. For more history on this
go to articles at www.worldbudokan.com There is great
scuba diving in Okinawa in case you didn’t know. Will get some dives in and
sightseeing along with a few festivals. Plan on training with Iken Tokashiki
sensei, Seifuku Nitta sensei and others. In the meantime, checkout Okinawan
Karate Voyage at http://www.yamazato-videos.com/.
New Website!
Matt
Apsocardu has a website with some great interviews and some interesting martial
arts info. Matt Thanks for remembering Hanshi Ken Penland. Go to http://www.ikigaiway.com
Sun Tzu Book This
book is out! Sun Tzu The Art of
War for the Modern Executive. Although
this book is intended as a business text you’ll find some of the information
very interesting from a martial arts perspective. The first 100 copies will be a limited edition and
each copy will be numbered and signed. The cost is $39.95. It will be available
on the website www.yamazato-videos.com or you can call Yamazato to order at 1-888-299-YAMA (9262).
This version and interpretation of Sun Tzu is an unusual mix of East Asian and
Chinese history, martial arts and business applications. I guarantee it isn’t
like any other version you’ve looked at before. It examines and analyzes Sun
Tzu’s wisdom from a number of different perspectives that are often if not
mutually exclusive certainly vastly different perspectives. It looks at Sun Tzu
from the eyes of a historian, a military man, a martial artist and a business
executive. Should be on Amazon.com before long
as well.

· New Dojo (s) added to the ISKKF. Sensei Thanh Ngo ngokarateka@yahoo.com has joined the ISKKF. His dojo is located in Valdosta, Georgia. He also has an affiliated dojo in Ho Chi Min City (formerly Saigon), Vietnam! That’s right! We now have a dojo in Vietnam! Additionally, Sensei Carmelo Romano of Messina, Sicily romano12@virgilio.it has registered his dojo with the ISKKF and the Okinawa Hakutsuru Kenpo Association. Sensei Wes Wooley will be starting a shorin ryu karate program at Sensei Mutch Usera’s dojo in Rapid City, South Dakota. wwooley@rushmore.com Wes trained with Hanshi Ken Penland. Welcome new members.
· Support the Troops! I see many cars driving around with “Support the Troops” bumper stickers on them. This is commendable but “How does that really help the troops?” We (ISKKF, et al) have decided to take donations, collect items and organize care packages to be sent to the troops. [Everyone at camp donated to this]. No matter how you feel personally about the politics and the war (s) there are young brave men and women overseas unselfishly doing their duty. I know how important it was when I was in Vietnam to receive a package from home and to know someone actually cared about me. I have already contacted the Marine Corps and they will provide us with the information on where to send our care packages and to whom to address them. Each package will contain a list of names of who donated. I feel strongly about this so I am thanking you in advance for your support and donations. Please call the Honbu dojo if you would like to donate to this cause. I does not have to be much. It’s whatever you feel like donating. 1-888-299-9262.

Let’s get juiced up!
Someone I know (I won’t mention any names but
his initials are Dr. Patrick Price) turned me on to a product called VIBE. It’s a vitamin supplement but comes in a 1 oz. Package. You
just mix it with water and drink it. Goes into your system faster this way. I
tried it and wow! What a great buzz! It’s All-natural and has
every vitamin, mineral, botanicals, antioxidants, Heart COQ 10, etc. blah blah
that you can think of. But no junk in it like taurine or caffeine. Since he only
gave me one packet I figured I’d go online and find out where to order it. Turns
out you can get it on line at http://www.eniva.com/ But it’s a multi-level
marketing scheme. Bummer! This usually turns me off but the product was so good
figured I go along with it. Seems I had to call them because you have to order
under your sponsor’s name. Oh! Please! Anyway, the gal on the phone gave me the
pitch. I asked her if I could eventually become a diamond premier member and get
a pink Cadillac and a free trip to Hawaii for having the
most sales. She didn’t think that was funny but took my order anyway! Hey! There
are many things that you can take to “Get
juiced up” and enhance your workout. You
can drink Red Bull, Rock Star, etc. or you can make your own shake with protein
powder and fruit and drop two Xenedrene in it. (Not saying I’ve ever done this!)
I guarantee you’ll train for hours but this isn’t healthy. Hell! You could blow
a hose! (Separate your aorta from you heart). This means you are dead! Or you
could just have a plain old–fashioned massive heart attack. So if anybody is
interested in a more healthy approach to training try this stuff. Go to http://www.eniva.com/ To place an order you
have to put in my number, which is 420314. Just thought I’d pass the experience
on. Maybe I’ll get a free trip to Hawaii!
